AMBALANG
AUSALIN
The Artist

Ambalang Ausalin, a well-known master weaver from Lamitan, Basilan, Philippines is one such weaver who can be regarded as the guardian of Yakan textile traditions. Thanks to her traditional weaving practice, which is most notably evident in the intricate patterns of sinaluan and sputangan, she was awarded with the title of a National Living Treasure in the year 2016.

Ausalin’s journey started as a child when she learned how to weave under her mother’s guidance. Over the years and with a lot of commitment, she mastered the art and became one of the best in the craft. It would not be wrong to say that her works were not just a way to earn a living; it was a devotion and a way of safeguarding the Yakan people.
