The Yakan Tribe

Resides on Basilan Island in the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), to the east of the Zamboanga Peninsula. The term "Yakan" means "Dayak Origin," reflecting their believed descent from the Orang Dyaks or Tagihamas of Indonesia. They speak a dialect of the Sama language and are culturally influenced by the Tausug. Their livelihood primarily depends on farming and land cultivation. The Yakans are renowned for their colorful traditional clothing and unique customs.
