About Ambalang Ausalin

Ambalang Ausalin, also known as Apuh Ambalang, was a Yakan master weaver who is widely acclaimed for her skill at weaving complex patterns such as the sinalu’an and seputangan. The textural complexity of her fabric order has been further enhanced by bright colors and precise geometric designs, which served as a proof to her great mastery of Yakan weaving tradition.
For Apuh Ambalang, weaving was not merely a craft but a reflection of the deep connection the Yakan people have with nature. She drew her designs from nature in her fabrics: mountains, grains of rice, and animal figures represent aspects of life and culture in her community. While seputangan represented the dawn and a good harvest with diamond and X-shaped patterns, bunga sama is a combination of motifs with butterflies and snakes that symbolize authority and power.
Beyond her artistry, Apuh Ambalang believed in the spiritual harmony between the weaver, nature, and divine. She expressed this interrelationship through her creations. She extended herself to ensuring the preservation of Yakan heritage by also teaching the younger generation to nurture it.
